Olympic Gold medallists Hannah Mills and Saskia Clark have won the coveted World Sailor of the Year title at World Sailing’s awards ceremony in Barcelona last night (8 November).
The pair who have been supported by Volvo Car UK for the last six years have been the world’s leading 470 team, with multiple championship podium positions throughout their campaigns.
Mills who began her sailing career at Volvo sponsored Optimist events commented: “We’re so grateful to everyone who’s here tonight to celebrate sailing and what a fantastic sport it is. Thank you to everyone who voted for us, but also to all the other nominees who were just incredible this summer. It’s really emotional, thank you very much everyone.”
Four times World Champion, Team Volvo’s Giles Scott was also within the nominees; but was pipped to the prize by Argentinian sailing legend Santiago Lange.
The girls’ award win was the fairy-tale ending for the duo as Clark bows out of Olympic competition.
