2013 saw three of sailing’s most talented, competitive, fun personalities, together with a kitesurfing world record breaker, put their speed to the test and raced head to head in the first ever ‘Volvo Sailing Speed Challenge’, a never-before-seen charity showdown held in the Solent during Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week.
This year the ‘fantastic four’ challengers; 2008 Beijing Olympic Gold Medallist, Paul Goodison – testing his speed on board a foiling Moth, double Olympic windsurfing medallist, Nick Dempsey, Alex Thomson, who in January 2013 became only the third Briton ever to achieve a podium finish at round-the-world yacht race, the ‘Vendee Globe’ and extreme kitesurfer, Sam Lutman-Pauc, who broke the world record kitesurfing across the English Channel in 2012, competed during Cowes Week for the chance to claim £1,000 in prize money for a charity of their choice.
The ‘Volvo Speed challenge’ ran during Cowes Week with live footage streamed on all three event screens located on Cowes Parade, Cowes Yacht Haven and Shepards Wharf Marina, with live commentary from Steve Ancsell and Shirley Robertson on Cowes Radio.
The race also culminated in a Youtube video which amassed over 11,000 views in its first month.
Into the Blue developed this creative concept for Volvo Car UK, to promote the breadth of their new sponsorship platform. Positioning the car brand as cutting edge, leading the way in sports sponsorship, achieving key media placement and a viral social media feature video with over 11,000 views in its first month.
